Tetris Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Each time a prominent prize-giving event draws close, there’s always a clamor to include additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer made the case for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
  • A different innovative game missed out that year
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked recently
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles globally maintaining this status for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with popular creative games for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
